Whacky's XBox 360 - First reveiw - Pt 1
Yes, it's true, I did complain Killer did not give a review, but was is this blog for? It is to give you a perspective from a couple of old guys on the latest and greatest we own.
Well, thanks to Killer, I now have my 360. It arrived Friday afternoon. Needless to say, I spent most of the evening playing it.
My review will be more of a chronological order with pro's and cons. This first part will cover the basic setup, the second part will cover the dashboard, and the third will cover the games.
My 360 is the premium unit ordered from Circuit City. I'm disappointed in CC because what they mentioned in their bundle and what were sold were 2 different things. The day it was ordered, the CC website was at best unreachable. Killer and I tried for 3 hours straight. He got in 5 minutes before me and was able to get the order placed. The bundle originally had PD0 as a game, and then took it off. Instead the bundle was the Premium, extra wireless controller, the play and recharge, memory unit, Need For Speed, Project Gotham Racing, and Madden 2006.
The first part was unpacking it. There are people complaining about the white box instead of black, but I think it looks kind of cool. There is now a power conditioner instead of just a plain cord. The good part is it does give you a lot of room from the conditioner to the unit itself, my recommendation is to give this as much room as possible, especially away from the unit itself.
Before powering the unit up, READ THIS! There is a clear, almost invisible, packing tape that is over the DVD tray and eject button. This needs to be removed. The XBox forums and Killer pointed me towards checking this out. Instead of being a protective film, it is tape.
There are 2 ways to place your 360, horizontal or verticle. I chose horizontal based on space on my cabinet, which from what I'm reading may be the better choice. I am not that keen on vertical disc units, plus, the tray for the drive on the unit is rather flimsy.
I have an HD TV, so the cables to hook up are included, which is nice. For the previous Xbox, I had to get the separate cables to hook to my TV.
There is a basic universal remote control unit with the box. You can use the remote to play movies, turn on the 360 and other miscellaneous media center functions. I have not programmed it yet to the TV, will have to try that out.
The memory unit now connects into the xbox itself instead of the controller. This makes the controller a little less bulky.
The headset is different setup than the previous. The volume control is integrated into the unit. Instead of a behind the head configuration, it is now over the top. I thought the behind the head headset was a little more progressive than over the head. The quality of sound and clarity of the mic is much better than the first xbox.
The wireless controllers are a little different. To me, they are more like the PS2 controller in function. There is now an extra button above each of the trigger buttons. The great part about the controllers is you can now turn on your 360 straight from the controller. This means you can leave your controller on the coffee table and when you want to play, just hit the controller and you are set. Another nice feature for PC gamers is that you can use them with your PC.
Tomorrow, I'll get more into the dashboard.
